Custom Paddles

The three paddles to the right
were five foot long paddles
that I hand carved and
custom designed for four
top leaders in our Boy Scout
troop who are also good
friends.

I designed each with designs
that shared great memories
I had with each person
and the to depict event that
were/are important in their
lives and events that we
shared together.

Allen was one of my Assistant Scout Masters and I started with the Troop 85 Arrowhead then added a fish outline to commemo-rate him catching his first Salmon with Susan and I in the Puget Sound.

The wrap on the handle shows Allen's love for sailing and the compass on the handle depicts his skill in navigation and his desire to teach orienteering to the Scouts. Each ray going out from the handle shows a position he held in the unit as well as being an Eagle Scout.

David was also one of my Assistant Scout Masters and Assistant Cub Master so I incorporated the Troop 85 Arrowhead and because of David's profession as a Scientist and his strong belief in God, I created a Double Helix with the DNA strands showing the words from Genesis 1:27.

David is an active long distance runner so I added the black & white lace wrap and commemorated a really fun and funny snow camp out at Camp Shepherd with the Webelos while still in Cub Scouts. The snowflake is a given, the Z's were to remind him of a snoring leader, and a Kung Fu hand with the word "Discipline" below it. This was added due to a picture I took of David during this trip that looks like he is getting ready to use that Kung Fu grip on a couple of the boys.

Johnny and Nancy were leaders with me from the their start in Cub Scouts through their sons Eagle Court in the Troop. Again, the Troop 85 Arrowhead is at the tip with the number 29 and a pinecone and branches to commemorate our many great camp outs at 29 Pines on the Teanaway River. Each dot along the side of the blade is for a Cub Scout or Boy Scout that we had in our unit during their tenure.

The small black belt and the Kanji or for their son Tyler's involvement with Tae Kwon Do and the handle was transformed into the likeness of a guitar neck for Johnny's love of that instrument (always wanted to be a rock star). Each "fret" has the name of a position that one or the other held within the units, 15 positions in all.
